Naoto on Megami Tensei Wikia
Personality: A very dedicated and often cool individual, Naoto could be taken as one who appears to put their job ahead of everything else. At an early age, it became a goal to succeed her deceased father as the next detective in her family lineage, and she initially approached with a childish enthusiasm. So proud to be called an Ace Detective at a young age, she expected to only be perceived as another competent figure, but that was a grievous error on her part. Children wouldn't accept her for being different and adults wouldn't accept her for being a child planning to upstage them. Besides what little family she had, Naoto was left essentially alone, too mature for most kids and being looked down for her age and because she was a girl. She ended up withdrawing to books, reading stories on the great fictional detectives and tried to emulate them as a loophole to being accepted.
In an effort to emulate famous detectives, Naoto cut her hair and began to turn herself away from all things associated as commonly female. Being raised by detectives made this easy enough and she always had more fascination with action figures and tools. However, when she reached puberty, she had to begin binding her breasts, either with a binder or a sarashi. Also, she began to speak in a more Japanese male manner, such as using 'Boku', the masculine pronunciation of 'I', and deepening her voice. Naoto purposely began to separate herself to enforce that she was self-reliant. She concealed her true self behind the mask of the mature 'Detective Prince', the name given to her by the media, which she had come to believe was her only way of being accepted.
Upon being rescued and having her secrets revealed, Naoto is put back on the path of proving she can succeed her father despite her age and gender. However, with years of acting like an adult male, it's difficult for her to be a girl again and the passion for her position has somewhat dwindled. Her grandfather and the Protagonist rekindle this passion for her job via her Social Link and set her on the path towards a future with friends supporting her.
While there's a rekindled passion, that doesn't help with certain, physical matters. Naoto can easily converse with people and maintain a formal and polite manner, but immediate attempts to adjust her to more feminine attire or behaviorism unnerve her. The idea of revealing more of her body is beyond her comfort zone initially and it takes months for her to find comfortable, professional attire. She becomes quite defensive when uncomfortable and needs time to calm down in order to articulate again. Questioning her competence over such trivial matters like her age or gender is a sure-fire way of annoying her so proceed in such discussions once prepared to debate. Overall, Naoto is a level-headed individual working on presenting her true self to the public, but tends to falter under insistence to be more feminine immediately as opposed to gradually adjusting and shows stubbornness when her competence is questioned.
